Selah Owusu

Family Law Fellow

Selah is a Southern California native, Southern Illinois University Simmons Law School student, and growing legal professional dedicated to community-centered advocacy at the intersection of public health, social justice, and systemic accountability.

Selah’s legal journey began in personal injury law, where she worked alongside a team serving lead paint injury victims from underprivileged communities – an experience that crystallized her belief that lawyering is much like social work, but with the power of the law behind it. With a strong foundation in legal operations, Selah brings a reputation for sound judgment, professionalism, and a genuine ability to connect with and communicate across communities.

Selah holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Maine at Presque Isle, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude, and is a Certified Scrum Master with cross-industry experience spanning engineering, technology and portfolio management, and law. That breadth of background informs a versatile, solutions-oriented mindset she carries into every professional space. Before law school, she managed firm operations, supervised legal support teams, and led recruiting initiatives – proof that her commitment to the legal profession runs deeper than the classroom.

At SIU Simmons, Selah serves as Community Action Chair for the Black Law Students Association and Treasurer for Parents at Law School, and volunteers with organizations supporting teen girls, women, mothers, and justice-impacted individuals. Her work inside and outside the classroom reflects a singular focus: using law as a vehicle for dignity and second chances. She is passionate about public defense, housing, re-entry, and immigration – and is committed to showing up for the people and communities that the system has too often left behind.
